Dr. Dmitri Bessarabov
The Director of HySA Infrastructure, Dr Dmitri Bessarabov, was recruited for the position from Canada in 2010. He obtained his Master’s degree in Chemistry in Moscow and in 1996 his doctoral degree at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. Dr Dmitri Bessarabov is an internationally-recognised visionary with extensive industrial and academic decision-making experience in the area of hydrogen and electro-catalytic membrane systems for energy applications and fuel cells. Over twenty years of progressively increasing responsibility in academic and industrial R&D environment. Leadership and managerial roles in the hydrogen energy sector. Strategic and creative thinker and experienced R&D Director with a proven ability to identify problems, propose and implement solutions, lead and manage teams. Passionate about LOHC, PEM fuel cells, electrolysers, membranes, MEAs and catalyst layers structures. Maintains active collaborative relationships internationally. He holds SA NRF rating, published more than 100 publications and a number of international patents. Worked for Kvaerner Group, Ballard Power Systems and AFCC in Canada. Current responsibilities include: Leadership in the National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Programme (HySA).
